Historical City Center

The city of Valencia, in the Mediterranean coast, has one the most complete and interesting historical city centers in Occidental Europe.

Romans, Visigoths , Arabs and Christians, have left in Valencia many monuments and archeological rests that we will visit. Among them:

Serranos Towers 1
It was the access door to the 3 different walls that surrounded the Roman, Arab and Christian city.
The door is dated on the XIV century, it was done by the quarryman master Mr. Pere Balaguer.

Quart Towers 2
They were built in the XV century and were recently restored, they still preserve the impacts of the cannon shots received by the napoleonic troops at the beginning of the XIX century.

Benicarló Palace 3
It is the headquarters of the nowadays Valencian Community Parliament.
It was constructed at the end of the XV century by Juan de Borja´s (Duque of Gandia) order.

Virgin's Square 4
It is a crucial centre for each of the 3 cultures even nowadays.
We can find:

  • The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary
  • The Basilica of Our Lady of the Helpless
  • Regional Government Palace (or Generalitat)
  • Archaeological Centre of the Almoina, and
  • Ornamental Fountain dedicated to the Turia River and its 8 irrigation channels.

Dos Aguas Marquis Palace 5
Built in the XV century during the highest and splendorous growth of Valencia.
It hosts the National Museum of Ceramic and Sumptuary Arts, since 1949.

Round Square 6
Built in the middle of the XIX century as a market area, and particularly for the fish and meat selling, due to the fact that it was very near to the municipal slaughterhouse. Today is an open-air commercial area.

Market Square 7 8 9 10
Ancient open-air arab market, outside the city walls.
We can find:

  • Saints Johns Church, from the XIII century (ancient Arab mosque)
  • The Lonja of the silk, end of the XV century; business center of traders since then. Declared Patrimony of the Humanity in 1996
  • Central Market, beginning of the XX century, 8.200 m2 and almost 1.000 stalls, it is considered one of the biggest indoors markets of fresh products in Europe.

Town Council Square 11 12
Political and communications municipal centre of the city.
We can find:

  • The Town Council, from the beginning of the XX century, ancient educational centre
  • Communications Palace, centre of the postal services, also from the beginning of the XX century
  • Ateneo business society, cultural association founded at the end of the XIX century, the building was constructed in the middle of the XX century

Xativa Street 13
It is the extension of the main commercial artery, Colon Street.
We can find:

  • The bullfight ring, from the end of the XIX century. It looks like the Nimes Amphitheater and the Roman Coliseum
  • The Railway North Station, modernist style building constructed at the beginning of the XX century
